about

For decades, bands like the Beach Boys and the Mamas and the Papas have been ingrained in the public consciousness as representing a kind of “California sound”. As important as such music was, there is no doubt that it has come to portray an idealized version of the state which does not exist for the majority of its residents. Banish the Chess Cat Remains, the latest release from multi-instrumentalist and Los Angeles/Inland Empire native Manny Madrid as the Lowered, presents a new California sound free of mythos, that is at once brutalistic and beautiful. With his endlessly inventive style, Madrid crafts an album that evokes both the dreaminess and disillusionment which more authentically represents the character of his home state.
Banish the Chess Cat Remains is sonically eclectic, with each song feeling like vignettes of a sunburnt daydream. “Hanatarash Is OK,” for instance displays the album’s idiosyncratic blend of acoustic and electric instrumentation, a foundation that fittingly underpins Madrid’s effortlessly cool vocal delivery. “I'm Not Geronimo” is a sensitive tune in which Madrid’s earnest lyrics are supported by a forlorn acoustic guitar-led groove befitting the tragic heroism of the Apache leader it is named for. Meanwhile, “The Matter of Fact” illustrates the surrealism of Banish the Chess Cat Remains, as frantic guitars leave the listener with a creeping sense of paranoia. As disparate as each of these sides of the album may seem, Madrid’s expressive songwriting is a constant throughout, making the album a singularly cohesive experience.
The Lowered’s Banish the Chess Cat Remains is a boundary-pushing album that nonetheless retains a distinctive pop sensibility. Equal parts spacy, relaxed, and gritty, Manny Madrid has eschewed cliches to leave audiences with a work that is endlessly imaginative and immensely enjoyable.
